How to apply kinesiology tape to the lower back
The lower back is one of the most common places people use tape for a feeling of support — during lifting, gardening, driving and long shifts on their feet. Two vertical strips either side of the spine is the simplest application, and a helper makes it much easier.
Before you start
- Clean, dry skin — no cream, oil or sweat. Apply about 30 minutes before activity.
- Cut your strips: Two I-strips, each about 20–25 cm, or two strips of 7.5 cm wide tape. Round the corners.
- Anchors and ends go on with no stretch; only the middle of a strip is stretched.
- Round every corner so the tape doesn't catch on clothing.

Steps
Bend forward slightly
Stand and lean forward a little, hands on thighs, so the skin over the lower back is gently stretched.
Tension: noneAnchor the first strip just above the waistband
Stick a 5 cm anchor on one side of the spine, about two fingers away from it, with no stretch.
Tension: noneLay the strip upwards
Peel and lay the strip straight up alongside the spine, keeping the same distance from it, finishing around the bottom of the ribs.
Tension: light to mediumRepeat on the other side
Lay the second strip the same way on the other side of the spine so the two strips are parallel.
Tension: light to mediumUnstretched ends, stand up and rub
Lay the last 5 cm with no stretch. Stand upright and rub each strip firmly for 20–30 seconds.
Tension: none
How long it stays on and how to remove it
Applied this way, the tape usually stays on for 3 to 5 days, through showers and training. To remove it, hold the skin with one hand and peel the tape back slowly in the direction of hair growth — in the shower or with a little oil if you prefer.
Good to know
Tape is for comfort and support during activity. If you have an injury or a health concern, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before using it.
Questions about taping the lower back
Should the strips go directly over the spine?
No. Keep each strip a couple of fingers to either side of the spine, running parallel to it.
Is the wide roll better for the back?
Many people prefer the 7.5 cm roll here because one strip covers more area. Either width works.
Can I sit and drive with it on?
Yes. Apply it while leaning forward so the tape isn't overstretched when you sit.
