How to apply kinesiology tape to the neck
People who spend long hours at a desk, driving or cycling sometimes use tape on the back of the neck and upper shoulders for a light, supportive feel. The neck application uses very light tension and is best done with a helper.
Before you start
- Clean, dry skin — no cream, oil or sweat. Apply about 30 minutes before activity.
- Cut your strips: Two I-strips, each about 15–20 cm. Round the corners.
- Anchors and ends go on with no stretch; only the middle of a strip is stretched.
- Round every corner so the tape doesn't catch on clothing.

Steps
Tuck the chin down
Sit upright and gently tip the chin towards the chest so the skin on the back of the neck is lightly stretched.
Tension: noneAnchor the first strip on the upper back
Stick a 5 cm anchor on one side of the spine at the top of the shoulder blades, two fingers from the spine, with no stretch.
Tension: noneLay the strip up the neck
Peel and lay the strip straight up alongside the spine to just below the hairline.
Tension: lightRepeat on the other side
Lay the second strip the same way on the other side so the two strips run parallel up the neck.
Tension: lightEnds with no stretch, then rub
Lay the last 5 cm of each strip with no stretch, lift the head back to neutral and rub firmly for 20–30 seconds.
Tension: none
How long it stays on and how to remove it
Applied this way, the tape usually stays on for 3 to 5 days, through showers and training. To remove it, hold the skin with one hand and peel the tape back slowly in the direction of hair growth — in the shower or with a little oil if you prefer.
Good to know
Tape is for comfort and support during activity. If you have an injury or a health concern, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before using it.
Questions about taping the neck
Why so little tension on the neck?
The skin here is thin and moves a lot. Light tension is more comfortable and keeps the tape on longer.
Which tape is best for the neck?
Pre-cut 25 cm strips are a good fit, or cut 5 cm roll to length. Beige is the most discreet colour.
Can I sleep with it on?
Yes. Rounded corners and unstretched ends help the tape survive pillows and collars.
